Anne Cowie/ Watercolors, Poetry

Anne has used creative expression to both capture memories and explore abstraction of the beauty around us. We asked her to share a bit about her creative path and where she’s headed.

This is what she wrote:

“I have written poetry in the past and am now entering the watercolor painting world. My creative process comes from assembling bits into a whole, whether they be lines, colors, words, or phrases. There is no linear or logical progression; rather, a feeling bubbles up from looking at a scene or remembering some piece of harmony or correspondence. Memorializing that seems important. Conveying it out to a reader or observer so they can discover their own sense of wonder or connection is a goal.”

Texas Falls

I remember
the freshets rushing
through dark woods.
Pool after pool,
they tumbled down
in run-on sentences.
Tangled roots clung to rocks
with ball-and-socket joints,
and delicate mosses waved tiny fronds.

I stood on the edge,
enthralled by spun water.
Perched on top of the crevasse,
I was not yet swimming,
not yet nearly drowning.

Twilight, Astoria, Queens

Outside
in the early winter chill,
street lights glow
as dusky leaves sweep across the street.
Sellers weigh oranges in the outdoor market.
A boy slides on his back to repair a car.
And two women slowly go up the steps
of the Church of the Precious Blood,
in English, Spanish, and Tagalog.

In the second-floor apartment
I rock my daughter’s baby.
Last week, he entered this world,
pulled by grateful arms from his warm cocoon.
Now, from behind closed eyes,
he watches woodland animals dance inside his head,
breathing with tiny lifts,
learning to inhale our sweet, adulterated air.

High above the church,
the moon skirts a sliver-edged cloud
and glides on.
