Mary Detweiler / Painting

Mary’s oil and acrylic paintings are as richly colorful as they are far-flung. We asked her to tell us a bit about her creative explorations, and the peace she finds on her journeys.

This is what she wrote:

“Art was one of many paths to explore at Middlebury but it didn’t last beyond first semester of freshman year. Still, the pull of doing something creative continues, and retirement was an opportunity. Painting shifts me away from over-thinking and into just trying things out, seeing where something leads, while being “in the moment” dissolves any sense of time. I start out with an idea but usually end somewhere quite different, which surprises but ends up motivating. It’s all about exploring, trying new ideas and juggling those around till something clicks. Lots of these explorations end up discarded or gathering dust on shelves, but occasionally something pleases enough to end up in a frame. It’s about the journey but there’s reward in seeing the tangible result.”
