Rick Brownell / Watercolors

Rick is one of the lucky many experiencing the enjoyment of painting following a career which, on reflection, was also influenced by his creative inclinations. We asked him to to share a bit about his path.

This is what he wrote:

“Opportunities to express creativity are all around us.  They are not exclusive to the arts.  In the business world, new product development and design are based on creativity.  So are marketing programs - including advertising, distribution and packaging.  And so on.  But, commercial creativity is simply a means to an end - making a profit.

I always knew that I wanted to paint, but painting had to wait.  My family and my career came first and left little time or energy for much of anything else.  Shortly after I retired, I began watercolor painting.  And now, it is the process that excites me.  The end result is secondary (and sometimes dismal).  Some artists may have innate talent, but I do not.  For me, the process has been a fascinating combination of education and application.  And I am continuously amazed at the variety, depth and complexity the process reveals.”
